Egg freezing also allows women to preserve their fertility until they are ready to start a family. This option is available to women who are diagnosed with cancer or other illnesses that may affect their fertility. It is also an option for healthy women who wish to delay falling pregnant until later, knowing that as we age our fertility function decreases. During an egg-freezing cycle, a patient will go through many of the same steps that are involved in a typical IVF cycle: ovulation stimulation, ultrasound monitoring, and egg retrieval. After egg retrieval, the eggs will be cultured for a few hours and then frozen the same day for future use.
The process is done as follows:
- First Consultation
- Preliminary fertility testing – Day 3 FSH level, ultrasound, infectious disease testing.
- First treatment appointment – ultrasound and medication review
- Begin taking medications
- Treatment visits for ultrasound review and blood tests (usually 5 in total over a period of two weeks)
- Egg retrieval – outpatient procedure with conscious sedation
- Egg Aspiration
The retrieved oocytes will be assessed by the waiting embryologist who will examine them under a high powered microscope and assess the quality of the oocytes. They will then select the best oocytes for freezing.
After the procedure, once you are fully awake, your partner can then take you home.
You will be informed about how many oocytes were retrieved, the quality of the oocytes and how many oocytes were able to be frozen.
