WHAT IS INFERTILITY?
Understanding Problems, Leads to Offering Solutions
“Infertility is the inability of a sexually active, non-contracepting couple to achieve pregnancy in one year”
World Health Organisation – Clinical Definition
This is when a woman is unable to bear a child, either due to the inability to become pregnant or the inability to carry a pregnancy to a live birth.
A patient who is younger than 35 years and has been having regular intercourse, at least 2 – 3 times a week and hasn’t fallen pregnant after 1 year.
This is when a woman is unable to bear a child, either due to the inability to become pregnant or the inability to carry a pregnancy to a live birth following either a previous pregnancy or a previous ability to carry a pregnancy to a live birth.
The patient is over 35 years and hasn’t fallen pregnant with regular intercourse after 3 to 6 months.
People are now more aware of infertility issues and more and more women are seeking treatment. Approximately one in six couples struggle to conceive.
Many of these couples have specific medical conditions which will hinder the woman’s ability to become pregnant.
In 40% of cases the issue is attributable to the female and in 40% cases the issue is traced back to the male. The rest of the time the fertility problems are linked to both parties, which means both parties require treatment.
